HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) earned its reputation by working on virtually any modern device, from smartphones to smart TVs, without extra plugins. Its chunk‑based adaptive bitrate system automatically shifts quality to match fluctuating network conditions, which can noticeably improve user experience during commutes or crowded events. Integrated seamlessly with most CDNs, HLS also benefits from mature tooling that simplifies packaging, encryption, and analytics for large‑scale broadcasters.
Yet HLS is not universally optimal. Its segment length—typically six to ten seconds—adds inherent latency that can frustrate live‑sport fans craving near‑real‑time action. The protocol’s reliance on HTTP GET requests inflates server load under massive concurrent viewership, demanding robust infrastructure. Additionally, HLS playlists are text‑based, making them prone to parsing errors if not meticulously generated, and some older browsers still require fallback solutions, complicating deployment.
